I just saw an episode of Dr Dee Alaska Vet. After the examination of a dog, she determined it needed a blood transfusion.

She anesthetized one of her own dogs (which she has done in the past) for the procedure. Do you think you would do the same thing if you were in her shoes.

    Very probably if it helped the patient survive, as hoped. I don't know if animals like dogs have differing blood-groups similarly to our own species.

    When I was much younger, I used to occasionally go along with a vet friend of mine on emergencies.

    He did this between a puppies and an older, non related dog.

    Transfusing directly into the puppy's abdomen was all that he did and it worked quite well---didn't even need to find a vein.

    And absolutely no problems for the donor either.
