Did you know that eating to much black licorice can cause heart problems?

There is something in the licorice root that causes potassium to drop which can cause heart palpitations and other heart issues.

  • Yep.  It's a cumulative effect too. It takes a lot of licorice over the course of days to have that effect.  On the flip, it's also good for men's prostate health as well.

Don't worry, most "licorice" at the store has no actual licorice root in it and is fennel and/or anise based.

I had not heard about the prostate health before.  Does it require a lot as well for effect?

I did not know that - I eat quite a bit of it figuring it's good for my digestive system so I guess I'll have to change that. Cheers!

It is said to quit quickly after stopping eating. So if you feel it helps with digestion, I would just let off for a few days every now and then.

Yeah.  I did know because my mom loved licorice.    She couldn't eat it any longer as her heart became less workable.

Don't eat a lot of it no matter who you are.

Who should not take Licorice Root?

My husband had palpitations before and I was surprised the doc did not mention it.

Do you know that licorice candy sold in the US contains little or no actual licorice from the licorice plant? It contains anise to give it a licorice-like flavor.

No, I didn't know that. I thought it just caused bottom problems.

Yes I did know that, but the stuff they sell only looks like and tastes like it.
But I don't eat it or the red either, they are to hard on the teeth.
