DIY: Why would I place a silver spoon in a bath of Baking soda water or ammonia and some aluminum foil?

    You're trying to change the chemical properties of the spoon, the foil or both. Or just polishing the silver to a mirror like finish. Add some salt and vinegar to speed it up. This post was edited by O-uknow at January 15, 2017 12:36 PM MST

    That is a demonstration of ion exchange for a chemistry class. It is not useful for polishing silver because the silver is redeposited as a fine powder. The piece still has to be polished to restore the shine.
