  • I am no expert here, and would be the first to admit that.. but it seems to me that alienating Canada who are your direct neighbours would be a silly move.. a spiteful move, which could well have adverse consequences later on.. tit for tat pettiness tends to lead to retaliation.. and revenge..  It's just not a good precedent.   

    A smarter move would be to make sure that companies that are AMerican have ever reason to stay in America, as in it's a good place, with favourable policies for workers and business.  

    Some people accuse America of being very insular, but the fact is you are part of the world and that means there will always be neighbours and allies and enemies to get along with and negotiate with.. You could try shutting yourselves off from the world entirely but I think you will find that there are many American interests outside of the US that would be seriously harmed if that were to happen.

    If American corporations manufacture in Canada, then yes, those goods should be subjected to the same tariffs as if they came in from any other country.  Some countries may experience higher tariffs than others as sanctions.  But no foreign country should escape the tariff.
