Why isn't your local fire department a SOCIALIST plot??

Hello:

Why don't right wingers scream and holler about a GOVERNMENT takeover of fire protection?? Why are they happy PAYING into a pool where EVERYBODY benefits?? Why aren't they pissed off because government CONTROLS the means of fire fighting?? Why are they OK with the government putting out a fire in your garage, but NOT in your heart??

Makes NO sense to me..

We've had this "discussion" before and you just don't seem to get it for some reason . . . But I have a feeling that I know why it doesn't make any sense to you . . .

My local fire department, like about 3/4 of the other fire departments in the USA, is a volunteer fire company that is funded by donations from the community it serves. There's a fund drive on right now. I'm sure that they would appreciate a donation from you, not that libs are into actually funding the services that they need.

(And no, they don't check to see if someone actually made a recent contribution before responding to a call.)

In other words, the people who DO make contributions cross-subsidize those people who don't.

Sounds like TEH EBIL SOCIALISM to me...;-D...

Also, it would be interesting to see what proportion of the POPULATION those volunteer fire companies cover. For example, the Internet indicates the state of North Dakota has somewhere around 325 fire departments (per the National Fire Department Registry ). North Dakota has about 740k people.

The San Fernando Valley (a region of Los Angeles, CA)  has 1.8 million people and 2 fire departments. (LAFD and the City of Burbank). This post was edited by OldSchoolTheSKOSlives at January 26, 2017 9:24 AM MST

    Hello again, Red:

OS nailed it...  Yes, we HAVE had this conversation before..  I said NOTHING about volunteer fire departments vs city fire departments..  Funding is the issue, not WHO pays.

Apparently, in YOUR neighborhood, the RISK is spread equally, but PAYMENT is not..  That can't make the PAYERS very happy.  And, I'm sure the people who get FREE services LOVE their FREE services...  What self respecting right winger would support a system where everybody benefits, but only a few pay for??

What about the Interstate Highway System?  In Colombia they have the purest form of capitalism.  Even the highways are privately owned.  The tolls are so high that it is frequently cheaper to fly across the country.
