  • The oldest known recording of the song is by Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Gwen Foster, who recorded it on 6 September 1933.
The most successful cover of the song was The Animals' rendition of the song which is recognized as one of the classics of British pop music.

The Animals - "House of the Rising Sun"  (1964)

i LOVE how this lead singer looks like such a young "boy" --  and then that VOICE!! Such a deep gorgeous voice! (Well, the guy is rather gorgeous, too, ha!)

I love this version of the song.

  • I really like their cover of See See Rider. It's a little upbeat, instead of blues style, but no ear plugs are necessary.
Here you go ... the video isn't that great, but you get the idea.

It reminds me family bbqs when I was kid  ....I have  few uncles in bands so we would sit around fire late night they would play guitar sing . Then my grandfather would announce his turn... always sang this song then immediately pass out in his chair ... Then party really started :p thanks  for memory :)

  • Yes two and by the same band doing the covers.  Both the originals sucked big ones.  GWAR made them not so bad though.
