Cremation or burial?

Which is the most practical? Which do you prefer? Or would you prefer a Viking send-off, set adrift in a blazing longboat?

    Just chuck me out in the woods and let nature do its thing. I'd like to atleast feed some critters and bugs with my corpse and maybe fertilize the ground for the plants.

  • There is actually a place where they do just that, I think it's in Tennessee somewhere.  They study the stages of decomposition or something like that.

    Cremation.  Land should be for the living, not the dead.  My niece will have my ashes placed in a bio-urn which will fertilize a tree.

  • Mine will go somewhere similar. There's a lovely bushland area just a couple of kilometres from home. I've spent a lot of time there over the past 50-odd years.

    When I was studying Buddhism, I learned about an Eastern culture that would just fling someone's remains off into the wilderness, so the animals could get the nutrition...and I really kinda like that idea.

    So my plan is, that I will know when the *sigh* end is drawing nigh, and go up into the woods and just expire there...leaving my body to benefit the wildlife...

    I'm sorry my mind works like this but, what if you get attacked by animals before you expire?  That wouldn't be a very pleasant way to go. :-(



    P.S. What religion does that?  Sounds like a common sense solution.

    I guess I should edit my post but I'm too lazy so I will post it here.  Virginia mentioned an Eastern culture that would fling someone's remains....  I'm wondering which culture (sorry, not religion) that does that.  I think it's a pretty great way to handle (& respect) the circle of life. :)

    It may have been somewhere in the Himalayas...
    And now you have given me something else to worry about!

    In 1998 I camped for several weeks in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona, the Tohono O'odham Reservation, and a panther had come up from Mexico. You could hear it calling in the night...I seem to be too dumb for even the animals to bother me...I was just delighted for it to be there, we were by Baboquivari Mountain, the sacred mountain there.     Well it sounds to me like the Himalayan Buddhists have the right idea.  You appear to be a well traveled & interesting lady.  I hope we see more posts from you mixing in more of your adventures!

    I had always assumed I would be cremated, but as I am learning more about green burials, I will choose whatever method is best for the environment.
