  • I guess ... If you really like or love your partner but know in the back of your mind they may not renew the contract when it expires, it might just make you work that little bit harder at the relationship

  • It sounds like your experience has been a happy one, and I think that's great. Honestly. But, aren't you romanticizing a practice that even Amnesty International is trying to put a stop to world wide?
Why do you think they are fighting against that? This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at February 23, 2017 9:17 PM MST

  • Part of life is learning to live with the decisions we make. If traditions, customs and laws removed the task of decision makng ... I'd feel like just another ant in the colony.

But ALF, the couple's decision is final, they may accept or reject the proposal.

  • Well, I'm not Jewish and I understand "artistic license," but this musical doesn't leave that impression. Even in this clip, it says, "The first day I met you was on our wedding day."  I would have to be really drunk to marry anyone the first day I met them. :)

ALF you know what, in India after the marriage the couple spend the first night together...imagine two total strangers on bed and the relatives throng outside to wish you a happy married life;)) LOL

  • At least some Native American tribes (Western Indians) have similar customs.  (and my earlier point ... he (Jackie) was drunk.  :) )

I knew a young couple whose marriage was arranged by the families.  I did not know that when I first met them, and would never have guessed that to be the case had anyone asked me.  It was their culture and accepted by them as normal, and that despite the woman having been born and raised here, while her husband came from another country.  There was a love and devotion between them that I do not see with many couples who choose their spouses themselves.  I cannot imagine having my husband chosen for me, but it apparently works well for some people.  As long as they are happy with it, I have no right to object.

umm Bozette, families of both sides try to see if the new couple are compatible in various aspects, so that differences after marriage are minimized and if couples have 'big fights' then the families try to intervene and reunite them, umm it does seem strange  to the west,I'm sure!
