What things are deal-breakers for you when it comes to a potential partner's past?

If you like everything about someone and their past is well behind them, what things may still influence whether you'll date them or not? Would having committed specific crimes matter? Jail time? Promiscuity? Prior marriages?  ??? What are your deal-breakers that relate to a partner's history?

Well, in a weird way, Charlie Sheen is obviously open-minded in that area.

  • It would depend on the nature of the crime. If that person's past indicated the capacity for meanness that was likely to re-surface at some time then I'd stay away.

A deal breaker for me is if he had any rape or molestation in his past.  That sort of thing doesn't readily go away, even with an effort to "turn a new leaf".

I guess for me it would be if the past was over, not necessarily forgotten but not effecting the present or future in a negative way.

    Absolutely---

Unless the past can be separated from the future, it is still present.

Accusations of murder would be a deal breaker for me.  Also smoking, yelling/bad temper,/verbally abusive, lying, poor hygiene, no sense of humor, making assumptions, jumping to conclusions, complaining all the time, no compassion, won't take responsibility for own actions, no self-confidence, worrying all the time, bad mouthing exes in front of the children, dog (animal) hater, and refusing to work/living off the gov't without a valid reason.

Actually, I dated a girl many years ago who had shot her husband prior to their divorce.

Three points to make---1)  it was necessary; 2)  he recovered nicely;   and 3) no charges were ever filed.

Good woman, good mother, good person.

  • This question is funny / strange for me cos  seeing allots of obvious answers( murder , pedi, nag.....ect. .....:)) I wouldn't want someone with past like I have.... Compare everyone to someone I hold in highest regard cos they left this world too very soon. So I wouldn't want someone like me. Meh! Also no one who dated someone better looking  than me .... Cos I said so :)

  • I thought you were being a little harsh till I got to the end of the list. Those anti-tildites never change. I wouldn't consider one of those, either.

I've never met anybody who was born a man, or born a woman either. Everybody I've ever met was born a baby.

I think being raised by mountain gorillas would be a deal breaker for me.  I'm not too particular.  ^.^.

If she used to be a man, that would have bothered me. I wanted a family and adoption is expensive.

Hi JA, hypothetically speaking a potential partner should be free of all vices you mentioned;))
