Should the U.S. make Spanish one of its offical languages?

Let's name English and Spanish as the two official languages of the U.S.

Let's not. Instead, we should send everyone away that refuses to speak English.

Why? English is not the US official language.

  • Really? Have you considered the Constitution, Bill of Rights, State of the Union, Congressional and Senate sessions, presidential speeches are all published or conducted in English?

  • Seems to me to be just an unwillingness to accept the obvious.

We already have a problem communicating.

    Why institutionalize it?

  • In 1929 there was a campaign in Texas to have Spanish, as well as English, taught in schools. The idea was kiboshed by state governor, Ma Ferguson, who said, "If English was good enough for our lord Jesus Christ, it's good enough for Texas." I kid you not.

Her clones still infest the political scene.

After 241 years, we still don't have an official language.  I seriously doubt there will be any changes made now.  But, if any attempts are in the works, you can bet the current administration will ensure Spanish won't be among them. ;-)

  • No. Fatuous PC nonsense.  The Constitution, the Bill of Rights, State of the Union address, Senate and Congress sessions, all in English.  English is the official language of the US regardless of people admitting it or not.

Correction:  It's the unofficial language of the U.S.  Nothing PC about it.

  • Consider the example in my first post.  What else could one surmise than English is the official language of the US?  Certainly individuals are entirely welcome to preserve and use the language of one's heritage.  But to fully participate in the US culture and economy English will be necessary.   To not acknowledge this, that English is the official language of the US seems silly.

My opinion is that it's ridiculous we haven't adopted it as our official language. Unfortunately, technically it's just not the case.  I can't for the life of me understand why this wasn't done from the outset and why it kept getting voted down considering the Federal government has it's hands in so many things.  I suspect it has more to do with individual states rights in which English is the state language in ( I believe but don't hold me to it) 32 of the states.
