    According to one researcher, we have defense pacts with 69 countries.  It is estimated we have almost 800 military installations in over 70 countries, and our military presence is far more pervasive than that.  It is a bit difficult to remain neutral under these circumstances.     Assume this is for the US.

    Whether they like it or not, they are so big that they are a side.

    Exacerbated by overuse of the military, especially in complicated conflicts .

    That is a very astute observation. I have never thought of the United States in those terms but of course you are exactly right! "....they are a side".
