A hundred years ago WWI was still being fought.

Did you have a relative fighting there? Do you have any personal stories to share?

How ancient do you think we are?

  • Not too ancient to have grandfathers. Or great grandfathers. Stories come down.

  • Hi Dozy,
My great uncle Ted was the chauffeur for General John J. (Black Jack) Pershing, General of the Armies on the Western Front, 1917-1918.

So in our family there were lots of those stories, unfortunately I did not pay attention so missed out, now I wish I had, of course!

  • Now there's a famous name. Even in Oz we know about Pershing. Your uncle would have had many stories indeed. As kids we don't pay enough attention, do we?

No, we don't and is why if there were stories passed down they have been forgotten and passed on into oblivion, *sigh*.

  • I remember some of Dad's war record (he was in France in WWI but then, I'm a geezer) but he didn't tell us anything. In my childhood home kids were to keep quiet and not ask questions. We were not really considered part of the family. We made sure that didn't happen to our own kids.

  • Yes, my Uncle Antone fought in WW1. Never ever said a word about it but I did read some letters he wrote during that time and it was quite horrifying. I still have his helmet in mint condition!

  • Thanks, Rooster. I'm glad he made it through. My father never spoke of it, either, but Mum told me a little. I don't think she knew much. (He survived the mustard gas attacks but was blinded in one eye by the gas.)

My maternal Grandfather was a Marine during WWI. I never got a chance to meet him so I have no stories.

  • Thanks, 99. I barely remember my maternal grandfather: he was a stern old man who held court on the odd occasion my mother took us to visit.
