If you had no transport and were forced to walk from (here) to (there),

how far do you think you could manage without becoming exhausted?

Hi Didge, during my graduation days, we never awaited the bus...we use to walk home....it was more or less 3 miles....very enjoyable and good exercise too!

  • We've always enjoyed walking, too. It's my biggest regret that although I still walk it's hard work these days.

Umm Didge....you know my yoga teacher taught how to jog without actually jogging...

Could this be of help Didge? Sighh I understand how it would be especially after leading a very active life.

  • Don't think so. I still manage 4 or 5 km every morning but it's more of a hobble than a walk.

  • It's a pain. Literally. And I can't get up enough speed to burn off any calories. Still, it's better than doing nothing.

Sighh but like Virginia said 4 or 5 km every morning is an achievement in itself my friend.

  • Hi Dozy,
Especially in warmer weather I try to walk one hour each day, and that is about three miles.
Experts say you can push yourself to three-fold what you are accustomed, or about nine miles, but I will subtract some just for being old...

I think I could walk six miles and still be okay, at least in the summer...kinda out of condition right now!

  • Sounds about right, Virginia. I'll bet you could do more if you really needed to.

  • I never learned how to drive, tried for years, it just didn't work out. I walk a lot and could probably make it several miles before i got tired. I did a 15 mile walk-a-thon once and made it the whole way. Of course, I was a LOT younger then, but I can still get out there and walk with the best of them. Not too bad for an old woman who smokes.

  • I was once walking and talking with a friend who had moved to a country town. We passed tahe town limits and kept walking and after a while I noticed that he was becoming distressed. We'd walked about five miles and I didn't realise that he wasn't used to it. I offered to walk back and get the car but he toughed it out. I never did that to anybody again.

  • That was a nice little stroll. I'm happy to hear he made it. :)

Depend on where "there" is.  If it's taking a walk to town, that would be about 6 miles one way.  I could do it but I don't know if I had it in me to walk all the way back up my mountain, which would force me to consider resettling. :-)

  • That's a pretty good hike. Maybe you should just visit town via Google Earth.

  • I could probably do about 7 or 8 miles before my leg starts hurting. If it weren't for that, I could probably do up to 10 or 11.  :)

  • During my Army days? I could walk for many miles and hardly break a sweat. But now? My beat up knees would only last so long!
