    Some English teachers want commas to be used sparingly---Not a bad idea.

    On the other hand, when someone answers a question and wants it to be mentally "read" by the reader as if he were listening instead to an identical verbal reply, he is quite right to insert a comma to force the reader to pause.

    Grammar is to serve communication, not to throttle it.
