  • Oddly enough. this practice predates photography. Portraits were painted in similar poses. A case in point, the famous painting of Napoleon Bonaparte by Jacques David. In the case of photography, practitioners used a head clamp to hold the head and neck perfectly still. A problem was that any slight movement of a hand would blur the picture and ruin it. So, placing a hand in the coat was one way of keeping in still.
