Could Hitler have pulled off the Holocaust without the support of most German Churches?

According to standard biographies, the principal Nazi leaders were all born, baptized, and raised Christian. Most grew up in strict, pious households where tolerance and democratic values were disparaged. Nazi leaders of Catholic background included Adolf Hitler, Heinrich Himmler, Reinhard Heydrich, and Joseph Goebbels.

    Could and did. Although raised Christians, most Nazis were not active members of traditional churches during the Holocaust and many churches helped hide Jews.

    Photos and documents of the time seem to show that while some did hide Jews and/or protest, the majority supported Hitler. If they had not, they would have ended up being declared illegal religions and thrown in to concentration camps themselves. At first the Catholic Church had their own political party but later became big players in Hitlers Reich. The majority wasn't Atheist or Muslim.

    Nazi Supporters
    The Nazis won their support primarily from the lower middle class and the peasantry. These voters were strongly nationalistic in their political views and feared that the depression would deprive them of their standard of living. In religion, most of the Nazis' supporters were Protestants. German Catholics remained firm in their support of the Catholic Center Party.
