  • Yes. That's what he is: older and obviously sick. I see a large vet bill in my future.

  • And then he/she died?

  • I learned my lesson on the first one.  IV's and dropper feedings are no quality of life.  It's not an easy decision to euthanize, but try to be merciful.

  • Yes. I've had sick cats and have done various levels of care.

I wouldn't put him through forced feedings unless the vet thinks that will get him back on his feet again, but not long term. We'll see what the vet says. I'm sure he will do blood work and an X-ray.

  • My cat goes on a self-imposed fast about once a week.

Have not been able to work out the reason.

A friend of mine had a cat that did not recover from the vicious attack of a wild tom.

The vet did everything right on a physical level

but the cat suffered such emotional trauma that she lost her will to live.

She just wasted away. But my friend loved her tenderly right to the every end.

I would have chosen euthanasia to reduce the suffering.

Actually, I was making a feeble attempt at humor, didn't realize that you may be talking about a personal pet.

We did have a cat that was diabetic. As I remember he stopped eating but did drink a lot of water. After we figured that out we managed to keep him around in pretty good shape for a number of years by daily insulin injections. Fairly inexpensive too, at the time.

Another thought . . . could your cat have a hairball that's obstruction his or her gut? Another possibility.

I wish you the best of luck with the critter! They can grow on you.

That was my thoughts.. there could be a obstruction.

So sorry Mr Bromide.. but you're doing the right thing by taking him to the vets to rule other things out and to confirm it is old age.

    Really sad :(

  • Yes, that's what I'm expecting. I've had cat with cancer before that did this same thing before they died.

And vets bills do add up, but we trust this one. It's when you start taking them to specialists that it really adds up.

  • Yeah, giving them medicine is ok as long as they tolerate it. I gave my cat some heart medicine that kept him going for a while, but he was ok with taking the medicine and still living a quality life.

I don't think I would go through cancer treatments if that is what is wrong with this cat. Maybe a tumor removal if they think that would help in the short term? I don't know. I'll find out shortly.

The weird thing was he was up and active this morning. However, I have also seen sick animals (and humans) get a burst of energy before they die.

He was a cat I recently inherited from a dead relative, but he's a good cat. So you just have to sit and wait...

  • X-rays showed nothing wrong. Blood tests come back tomorrow. Vet giving fluids and appetite stimulant.

    $$$$$$$$$$$$

Oh, well. What are you going to do?

Mr. Bromide, I just went through this with a cat.  He suddenly was dragging around and wouldn't eat.  His bloodwork and everything was fine.  I just know he had had a round of vomiting before he stopped eating, so something got to him.

Yes, the vet gave him appetite stimulants and he even needed IV fluids twice in one week because he was so dehydrated.  I was trying everything to get him to eat and helplessly watching him become skin and bones.

I got on the Internet and found out that feeding them just a little bit of meat baby food or a special snack food like turkey can get them interested again.  You have to be patient.  They may only eat a spoonful once or twice a day.

After about a week, he was started eating normally again and has since put all his weight back on.  This was such a relief since I was so scared of him dying.

Don't give up!!!  Post back if you have any questions.  This cat is about 7 or 8 years old with no other issues.

Just don't assume this kitty has cancer.  They can stop eating for all sorts of reasons.

Read below my experience with this.

  • Yes. He has a liver problem. He was starting to show jaundice. We're going to do a little more for him in case it is something that can be treated, but the odds are against him. We're giving him fluids and making him comfortable. Then we're having one more test done to see if it is a blockage that could be treated. Then we'll just continue to make him comfortable. I've had several cats and know when they're ready to be done. Usually when they have a high fever and they just want to hide. He doesn't seem to be in pain, just tired.

  • Had to put him to sleep this morning. He was pretty much done and nothing was making him better.
