What Would You Do?

This scernario was reported in this morning's newspaper. I know what I would have done,,,or what my mother would have done. What would be your reaction?

A woman and her friend went out to dinner. The woman who issued the invite brought her preschool child with her and let him sit on her lap. The kid ate a couple of dinner rolls, then whined for another one. The mother refused with, "No, honey. You had enough rolls. The chicken will be coming soon - we'll wait for that." The boy didn't fuss or cry - but he turned around and popped his mother right across the mouth "and it was apparent he'd done that a million times before."

As I said, I know what my mother would do. What say you?

  • I guess first off I would say that I would never have let my children get to the point where they are hitting a parent. But in this case they would have earned themselves a trip to the restroom for a spanking. Certainly that would have been the case when I was a child.

  • Her child should not have been taken to an adult restaurant.

Attention-spans are different these days with all the electronic devices  that condition us and our little ones.

He does need to learn not to hit.  A very important survival skill.   Mom needs to teach it but only she knows how this young person best learns.  Odds are some quick response along the lines of a loud NO! and possibly a tug on his hair or a pinch would work.  Being dragged off to the Ladies Room (what happened to most of us) takes too long, is too big a commotion, etc.  I identify with bratty kids and always wish them well.

  • And me, too. I didn't DARE hit my mother across the mouth - and she didn't us. But apparently he got away with doing just that and was never corrected. He should have been corrected INSTANTLY the FIRST time he ever did it - and certainly before you took him out to eat. I went to IHOP  this morning before going home - and I saw kids running up and down the aisles after the waitresses, shouting and doing anything but listening to their parents - who seemed to give up and keep talking like nothing happened. Where did discipline go?

  • I agree Mary. It makes you sick when you are out and see those kids who have never been disciplined by their parents and do not have an ounce of respect.

  • Alfred - not only that, but we are getting too many "Nosy Parkers" In the ladies' bathroom. In out day. nothing was said. Today, women complain if/when a child is dragged in there to exact discipline.I couldn't believe it the first time I heard complaints...but they are getting worse and worse and more frequent.

I agree with you, Mom should be the one to teach this kid not to hit and INSTANTLY, the FIRST time and EVERY time he does it - and she knows the best way to make him mind her.

  • When we first learned to eat out, we were thoroughly taught home to sit at the table, not throw food, stay sitting until excused properly.Only when we knew these rules were we allowed to eat away from home. Never before.

  • Many parents not give a flip how their children act, and others are afraid of the state, with both of these issues going, it is no wonder that there are so many disobedient children in the US, not sure what is going on in the rest of the world!!
