Can you tell if your nuts are rancid? I usually go by the smell.

The best way to describe the odor is that spoiled nuts smell like paint.
It's a distinct and unpleasant odor. Animals who enjoy these tasty treats also utilize their olfactory senses to distinguish whether their nuts have gone bad.
Remember to practice food safety and enjoy your nuts before their shelf life has expired

  • Just like a fine expensive stinky cheese, I often enjoy the smell of rancid nuts.  Especially the ones you serve when we party.  I think you should package that smell of yours you are referring to.  I've always quite fancied it.

    I cannot tell.  There is a reason.  I have a RANCID NUT in Washington DC who stinks so rotten, I cannot smell any other rancid nuts.

    He is the BIGGEST and SMELLIEST NUT ever to be elected.  The stench can be smelled all the way to Denmark.

    I did an experiment with my nut a few years ago. I exposed them to the element for a few months and the did not become rancid. For some reason, the local squirrels wouldn't eat them.
