I'd like to see proof that this changes energy consumption. I don't think we all live the same way as we did in WWII. If there is any benefit to DST, I'm open to it, but if not, let's stop this nonsense.

There is no benefit.  You either have to turn on your lights in the morning or at night.  One part of the other of the day is going to be dark.

I believe that the idea was that daylight would be when people are awake and using energy and that longer daylight hours were good for businesses.

The reason(s) for this practice started out as energy conservation in time of war (not sure if it was WWI or WWII).  When the war was over, it was to help farmers.  Now that most farming is done with machinery, there really is no reason to continue it.  There are states that don't abide by it - Indiana comes to mind.  Then there are cities that don't follow it within states that do.  How crazy is that? That's why I want to know why we're still doing. And the farmers never liked it, it was the business owners. Farmers like daylight in the morning, business owners in the evening.

I agree with you.  We should leave it as it is right now and be finished with it.  Just one more idiotic thing about which no one seems to be able to do anything.

I can’t see there being any use for it anymore, if there is I’d like to know what.

Me too. If there's a point to continuing it, I need to see proof.

  • With all due respect to Dr. Benjamin Franklin, if there was ever any need for it before, there's certainly no need for it now. Leave the clock alone.

Yes, it's stupid.  I think we should stay on Standard Time (never DST).  My two  senators are trying to pass  a bill  that would force DST for the entire country.  President Trump has said he thinks the country should be uniform and suggested he preferred Standard Time.    I've written both of my senators.  I think all states should be on the same time.....we already have to worry about four time zones when doing business in our country.  With some states on DSL and some not it just is crazy.  I lived in Washington State and I lived in Florida and people don't get the same numbers of hours of daylight.  Florida is pushing for it because of tourism.....they want long sunny days.   I want an hour relative earlier relief from the horrid heat  and brutal sun of Florida.  But I just prefer Standard Time regardless of where I live.  I like for it to be dusk or dark at dinnertime.   This post was edited by Thriftymaid at March 10, 2020 2:55 PM MDT

I’d prefer Standard time over daylight saving also, but at this point,  I’d just be happy if we could stick with either one.

  • Disagree.  I enjoy having a reason to change my clocks at least twice a year so I won't forget how to change the time on my clocks.

It goes on for too long. When it's light at 4am (a month either side of summer solstice at high enough latitudes), DST makes some kind of sense. Hardly anybody is up that early. When it drags on so long that kids are going to school in the dark, it's ridiculous.
Australia has five time zones in summer. The two states and one territory that cross the Tropic of Capricorn (Queensland, Western Australia, Northern Territory) don't do DST, the others do.

That’s weird, I can’t think of the earliest it’s light here in the summer, but I know it’s nothing stupid like 4am. I think it’s about 6am earliest light here.
