Window seat!
~
You must not have taken a flight of over 16 hours yet.
On one such flight from Los Angeles to Beijing about a decade ago, my wife had the aisle seat (she ONLY takes the aisle seat, as she needs to go to the restroom about every 20 minutes) and I was next to her in the middle seat. An elderly Chinese woman had the window seat, and we soon learned that she didn’t speak any English because when she wanted to get go to the restroom, she would just wordlessly do an Olympic-style vaulting exercise to get over me, then over my wife. There was no preamble or warning, she’d just start climbing over us. She had some phobia about letting her feet touch the floor until she got to the aisle, so she only climbed over the seats and armrests. Granted, she was tiny, so she was able to do it, but using hand signals, we kept trying to get her to understand that we would patiently make way for her to get to the aisle. No avail. On the return trip from the restroom to her seat, she’d try the same thing, but we’d be on the lookout for her, and try to rise so that she could pass by us in some kind of normal way. It never worked, because she ignored is completely.
Finally, a couple in the seat behind us could gauge our frustration, and intervened to say that many older Chinese people who don’t speak other languages are culturally ingrained in a kind of don’t-bother-the-foreigners attitude, which is really a don’t-bother-the-foreigners-who-are-obviously-too-ignorant-and-too-inconsiderate-to-learn-to-speak-any-Chinese-dialect attitude. As such, she didn’t even expect the us to show her the courtesy of patiently making way for her, so in her mind, it was necessary to hurdle over us as if we weren’t even there. The couple spoke her language, so they offered to politely inform her that we would politely move so that she could go to the restroom whenever she needed to, all she had to do was make some kind of signal and also show some patience. It took at least a couple of tries for her to get it down pat, but once she did, the rest of the flight was a bit less in enjoyable unenjoyable.
