How long would you stay in business if you made products that were often DEFECTIVE?

    I wouldn't last very long, but the major appliance businesses will continue to flourish even though their products are built to last only five years now.

    The first fridge I ever bought lasted 30 years! Subsequent purchases? Not nearly as long although the one we have now is about 13 years old and still going strong. Planned obsolescence insures that folks are forced to buy replacements. If you make the product TOO GOOD you are depriving the company of repeat customers more frequently. Who is going to do THAT?     Not long at all, but as Element points out, many domestic appliances and  the like are designed to have a fairly finite, rather short life.

    My ex is the proud owner of a 70 year old fridge that still works. She keeps beverages in it. Compressors now are good for five years.

    That's what CAPITALISM is all about. The more often you have to buy a product the more money the company makes. PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE rocks. Makes billionaires out of millionaires. Who wouldn't LOVE that? Sigh. Thank you for your reply Durdle! :)

    That's not the oddest thing though. Some automobiles become worth FAR MORE later on! Worth far more than the owner paid for them! Like some wines. Or homo saps. Thank you for your reply E and Happy Sunday to thee and thibne! :)

    Worth far more than original IF it is a popular vehicle, like a Corvette etc, AND you wait 30 years. My ford escort won't be worth diddly then.

    That's funny E! When I worked for a couple who owned 7 McDonald's restaurants the husband of the husband/wife team was a car collector. He had a huge warehouse where he stored them. Once some of us went with them and saw the cars. I think he collected for an investment only. He never drove any of them. They were all big boxy. Not one sleek nifty one among them. The collection I'd like to see in person would be Jay Leno's. Thank you for your reply! :)
