I always thought it was weed. 

Death from drugs (cocaine, qualudes, alcohol, shooting up,  etc)

It is about drug addiction:

Oh, man. That just sucks! 

I'm going to try to forget this. 

I did not know either.  I just looked up the lyrics yesterday after you posted.  It is an anti-drug song.  I never "heard" the words "of death" in it.   But know that I know them I can heard it plain.   

I always sang "the smell that surrounds you."

I never heard 'death' either, nor did my friends in high school. We thought it was just a big marijuana celebration anthem!
