Do you know anybody who participated in a debutante ball?

A debutante ball is a formal ball that presents debutantes during the social season.

One of my high school schoolmates was an escort for a woman at a debutante ball that took place in 1968.

  • No.  I grew up in the Midwest and I didn't know anyone who went to a debutante ball.  I think those are for rich folks in big cities.

  • I have to wonder if those types of events are really what young women need to focus on?  Seems a lot of them are just prepping themselves for finding a rich husband.  I would much prefer my daughter to concentrate on getting an education and finding a career to be a self-sufficient human being.

Yes.  This is where young ladies are presented to society.  It's a foo foo thing, but harmless.  It doesn't take a lot of money to do this in a community.  For some reason it's thought it is only for the wealthiest classes.  Less wealthy communities could do this for their girls just the same.  It might not make the society page on the first year, but after that people will complain if it doesn't.  Very easy change in society for girls of less means.

I know a few. Not close friends, one cannot have champagne tastes on a beer income.

    No.

They were fashionable in English high-society (which I ain't in, not no way) until well into the 20C, but gradually faded away. I don't know when they disappeared generally though.

I didn't know they even still occur, especially in supposedly-egalitarian America! :-)

They were on ce part of English high-society, perhaps reaching their zenith in the 1910s or 1920s, but I think they died out decades, or more likely generations, ago.
