I could not be sure because in the Bible it says 'the ways of the Lord are mysterious indeed'. So who knows what kind of thinking prevails among those denizens of the spirit world. But the event could have been an intervention by some supernatural force beyond any man's control.

No comma was needed because it wasn’t two independent clauses, and it flowed smoothly without the comma. And to answer your question about Randy and I colliding, it happens most often that I am right and he is wrong.

Now how come it's not "because they aren't two independent clauses"?

Because you wrote it in the past, so I used past tense. But aren't also is correct.
