Seniors here, do you remember "Can you come over and play?"?

    We just knocked on doors; I don't remember using the phone until I was in fourth grade.  We had a phone as long as I can remember but it was for the grown ups unless they wanted us to say hello to whomever they were talking to.  And I do mean just a quick Hello.

    Now wait; when do we have to call ourselves seniors?

    Knocking on doors is the same principal. I remember once I called a friend and asked if John was there. His father said "Yes" and hung up. Now when my wife's friends call and ask if she is there, I say 'Yes, she is', and stay silent until they ask to speak to her.
    You are a senior if you remember those phones and TV was black and white.

    GenX here, we didn't get colour TV until 1976 (I was seven) and my family home still had that kind of phone until my parents sold it more than twenty years later (Mum couldn't manage stairs anymore, it was split level).

    I don't see myself ever saying that.  "Can I come over to your house" would have been more realistic. 
    However, I don't actually remember saying either one.

    We didn't have to call each other - there was an unwritten rule that when we got home from school, we changed into play clothes and went right back out to play.  When it was raining, we just all stayed in our own homes. This post was edited by Spunky at April 5, 2023 7:55 PM MDT

    Telephone? Nonsense! Our street was all single family homes (except the duplex that had been a barn before it became a street). We would go to the front of the house where the friend lived, stand on the lawn just off the side walk, and yell out their name. If there was no response, we'd moved on the the next friend's house.

    My mother loved telling the story about my younger brother and sister who came home from looking for someone to play. My brother said, "San (Sandy) and I were the askers. No one was out but Filmer (elderly retired neighbor) and he wouldn't play." I think that my brother was married with children when my mom was still repeating that quote.

    We didn't use the phone because our apartment faced the street on which we played.  It was a given that every day when the weather was not too cold, we would come home from school, change clothes and go right back out again.  All we had to do was look out the window to see who was already outside.
