Almost every address has a number and name followed by avenue, circle, court, place, street, etc.

A pet peeve of mine is when people write an address without the last part, eg 100 Central instead of 100 Central Avenue. Grrrrr. Does this bother you?

It’s not only in writing, some people even refer to addresses that way when speaking. It became increasingly bugging when I began living in San Diego County, because (for example) there is a B Street in the city of San Diego and in at least two other incorporated cities in the county. There is also a B Avenue in more than one place. Without specifying the full address and the part of the county, confusion abounds. Grrrrrrr.

      Makes a guy want to . . .

Leaving the last part off where I live wouldn’t work very well because most towns and cities in my area use the Burkle System. Only the two streets that form the axis of the grid have proper street names.  The rest are numbered streets or avenues followed by NE, NW, SW and SE.  Something like 401 9th would apply to eight different addresses.

In my metropolitan area, streets are numbered and avenues are named (with a few exceptions). So, it's usually not necessary to specify which it is.

What’s a good example of that, please? Let’s use your residence as a guide.

I can give Randy a ride over there.  My step-brother’s probably going to be let out with probation after the sentencing phase so I’ll ask them if Randy can have my step-brother’s old room.

Yeah, right! It can’t be that easy, but I’ll check it out anyway.

”United Airlines? This is Randolph D Randall, and I’d like to book a round trip flight from San Diego to Minneap . . . YES, AGAIN! Why, is there some problem? YES, I KNOW I FLY THERE ALL THE TIME, YES, I KNOW I’M PROBABLY THE ONE CUSTOMER WHO BOOKS THIS FLIGHT MORE THAN ANY OTHER CUSTOMER! Can we just please complete the process without more commentary about my obsessions? Grrrrrrr.”

Give Livvie your flight info. She offered to give you a ride to that address.

Grrrrrrr. Please don’t let others infringe on the happiness that you and I can have if we ignore the world and only focus on each other. (((For quite some time now, Livvie has had it in for me, and will do anything to bring about my ruin. Shun her.)))

  • In Buenos Aires, Central 100 would be an address on a minor street, Avenida Central 100 would be an address on a major street. We also write our street addresses in reverse order to street addresses in USA. ( 9200 W. 108th Ave. would be Av. 108 (O) 9200. )

What's annoying in my neighborhood, one number can be Street, Avenue, Road, so if someone says Queens Boulevard and 71st, you don't know if it's 71st Street, 71st Avenue or 71st Road.

There are so many numbers available, I don't know why they had to use the same one three times over.

Yes, especially if there's a lane and a road with the same name within the same postcode. Guarantees that at least half will likely end up at the wrong address.

Toledo's street names are unique to each, so dropping drive, avenue etc is the norm here.

Where I live the Rd, Str, Ave is never necessary.
If I am just talking I will not say the suffix, but if writing I will use the complete name.

Many of our road/streets names are grouped...so if I say Concord, someone familiar will know that Blackberry is in the same area.  Or a President's name will get you to the correct area of town.
