Depends on the day. If I go shopping I might walk a quarter mile. Other days when I am sitting on my butt, just enough to get to the fridge to get a beer and walk upstairs to AM on my PC.
Saturday is about the only day I don't leave the apartment. The rest of the week, I'm either at work or, on Sundays, I have places to go. I walk to and from the bus stop, I work in a hospital, so I do a lot of walking if I need to go anywhere inside it.
of course the pedometer could be wrong...LOL but I wore one for a few weeks...blew my mind. Am a general contractor...doing a lot of walking for sure all day long stairs, ladders, job sites etc
I started driving a car when I moved down here. Before that, I would literally walk at least 5 to 10 miles in a day and not even notice.
Now? I am lucky if I walk one block. I woudn't drive so much if it were not for this godforsaken weather down here where walking in 110 degrees gives you cancer.
If you don't die of dehydration or heat exhaustion first.
I have to go to the gym just to use muscles down here.
Walking is not a choice. But, you could live near public transportation and survive just fine. Everything is air-conditioned. It's not a 3rd world country, but you just don't stay outside for long.
That's what I do here. I've always lived close to the bus line. The thing is that sometimes I really like to just go for long walks. I like the bus because I can read, I like to walk because I can think.
