Are weeds specialists or all alike? Are the weeds that grow in flower gardens the same as those that grow among carrots and zuccini?

All the weeds we had were of the same three or four species.

Hmm. Really Ele? I wonder if there are as many species of weeds as there are flowers? I'm gonna ask. I suppose I could Google it but maybe among Answermuggers are some folks who have a green thumb. I'm gonna ask that too! Thank you for your reply and Happy Tuesday! :)

What is a pretty plant to one is a weed to another. The local corn farmers here would NOT want my Hostas in their fields, and I don't want corn growing on my lawn.

All plants are specialist to some extent. They grow where the soil and weather conditions best suit them, and if the carrots and zucchini are as happy as the decorative flowers in the same garden, the weeds will be just as happy wherever they are in that garden.

Very pretty weeds grow in our backyard in the spring Durdle. After the rains. Where they come from I don't know. They look like flowers to me but Jim says nope they're weeds. Who decides that anyway? It isn't appearance alone that determines weediness. Well beauty is in the eye of the beholder and if I behold weeds  that I think are beautiful then they're flowers to me. I have had flower gardens and gardens where everything is edible. Since I'm a foodie I much prefer weeding soil where food is growing although of course I do love the appearance of flowers. But vegetables can be beautiful too. Kale for instance! In California you can grow food all year. Of course there are seasonal fruits and veggies. I always had bad luck growing winter veggies. I don't know why. Oh. As an aside. Years ago flowers were used in hoity toity fancy dancy upscale pretentious restaurants in California. I think it was nasturtium flowers or something There were used in salads. I couldn't believe it. I believe that was a fad. Ever eat a flower? Me neither! I'm gonna ask that question. Thank you for your reply! :) This post was edited by RosieG at October 31, 2017 2:38 AM MDT

A weed can be deemed as anything growing in the wrong place.....ie ,a daffodil growing in a Rosie garden .....Hehe

Some "weeds" are really pretty NJ. I'm not sure what defines a weed anyway. So I'm gonna take your definition because it makes more sense to me than anything else. There's a song that talks about that...a silly song. "I'm a lonely little petunia in an onion patch, an onion patch, an onion patch. I'm a lonely little petunia in an onion patch oh won't you come and play with me?" Thank you for your reply and Happy Tuesday m'dear! :)

Hi honey! Football "pitch"? Is that a football"field" NJ?  I expect the same is true of a golf course although they do have different kinds of grass and patches that look like weeds! Thank you for your reply. How are things going for you? Our weather is FINALLY reflecting autumn! Soup weather! Love it! :)

Football Pitch and football field are the same Rosie......it's where boys boys young or old go to play their childhood games ...:(

Yesterday morning it was warm enough to walk about in summer clothing.....it got a bit chilly in the afternoon though...

I'm not working today  so I've just made lumpy chicken broth for tonight's meal....I do like soups and stews.....
All the females in our family are good cooks.....all shown how to by my grand parents....even the boys can cook for themselves.....lol

Me too NJ. My sister and I LOVE to make soups. We love to cook period. So we've finally got soup weather in southern California and I am pleased as punch! Oh thanks for the definition of "pitch" as you intended it to be understood.  It sounds like a very nice place to go and remember your long ago. I think it's  EXCELLENT that the males in the family can cook for themselves. I mean there are certain basic things everyone should know how to do and washing clothes, cooking for yourself, knowing how to balance a bank statement, paying bills in timely fashion are just a few of them. Now some would say gals should know how to change the oil but I've never been interested in that. Anything that gets you dirty? Not my cuppa tea. Some gals are really good at it and knowledgeable about maintaining cars though and my hat is off to them! I'm always impressed by that kind of knowledge. I have zero interest in it. I'm really not a girly girl but there are some things that are definitely guy things and changing the oil is one of them in my universe! Thank you for your lively reply my friend! :)

I was always with my dad when he did anything from construction to messing about with vehicles ....like my dad and brothers I can turn my hand to most anything....only strength and my hight lets be down slightly......on the other hand being small lets me get into tight spaces so my dad being big always took me with him when ever he could....

I was always messed up as a kid  and my mum would always go crazy when my cloths got filthy....lol

You were a tom-boy girl! Well good for you NJ!  Good for you! Your knowledge was broadened because you were curious and didn't let gender stereotypes get in the way. I bet you enjoy camping too! I don't. I don't mind hikes or things as long as I can have a good shower afterwards and sleep in a clean bed INSIDE. Once upon a time when I was 14 we were camping in Yosemite! I was on a cot. A bear came charging through looking for food. After it left I got in the car with my mom and infant sis and that was the end of any camping for me forever after. Too scary! Thank you for your reply and Happy Wednesday m'dear! :)

    How do you define "weed"?

For example, many people think dandelions are weeds. Yet I've had some very nice salads made from the succulent, young leaves and some very interesting wine made from their blossoms.

And then there's elderberries that grow along the roads. Wonderful jelly and also with the wine.

I think the best definition I've seen is that a "weed" is a wild plant growing in the wrong place. Wrong for us that is, not for it.
