What is advantageous about claiming Native American ancestry? Don't they always get shafted/stiffed/the short end of the deal?

Seriously. I don't get what it buys you. Does it buy you any advantage to be descended from royalty? Now I know in Hawaii it is a very big deal. Sadly so in my opinion. Is it a very big deal everywhere else too? What is inherent in your ancestry that makes you so special you get treated differently? Betterly? Anyone know?

In some circles it gives you cachet because native Americans are supposed to be wise and closer to the earth and so on. Besides being the symbol of victimhood because they were often at one time killed and thrown off their land. Ironic that now so-called descendants are claiming former tribal territories as their own and getting a certain number of governmental concessions. In this area they are allowed to run gambling casinos on claimed  lands and have the final say on anything that goes on there.  Many people have Native American ancestry because there was so much intermarriage and many of these people now realize they can get more bang for their buck by so identifying themselves. I think Louise Erdrich the writer has so identified with that part of her heritage that she denies all other parts. And she would not participate in one of those genealogical TV shows because her 'tribal elders" told her that she should not have publicly revealed any of her non-native ancestry.

Thank you for your thoughtful and informative reply og. I appreciate it. I still don't get it though. Blood is blood. As long as it is healthy and not diseased what else really matters? SIGH. :(

Claiming to be a victim is the primary M.O. of the far left. Originally the far left just tried to claim that the poor were oppressed by the rich. Now they've diversified into also using race and gender to sow discord.

The far left are weak immoral scum. They want to steal from others. To do that they need to be perceived as virtuous while demonising their target.

Warren wishes she wasn't white. She hates Caucasian civilisation because it's the cultural origin of liberty and capitalism. She wants to try to criticise it. It's difficult to criticise something you're part of. So she's trying to minimise her whiteness. What a ****....

Well I think she is bad enough on her own we don't need to charge her with anything additional.  What you write about sowing discord is exactly right.  Political capital made from sowing discord.  And creating discord or a sense of discord where in fact none exists.  Guess what bothers me most about her is her notion that somehow we are all such chumps and "victims" that we must need her and the federal govt to protect us from hard-working and successful people taking advantage of us. Like somehow we are such "victims" we are unable to even take care of ourselves!   I feel I can say that because I live in the state where she was elected.
