Why are smaller cats' young called kittens and large cats' young called cubs?

I think it's "domestic" vs wild.

    Lynx young are cubs.

And what small "wild" cats I could find, with young called kittens, appear to be thought as having once been domesticated.

I’m more worried why we drive on parkways and park on driveways.

Because cubs is more regal sounding.   Unless you want to say "here kitty kitty" to a panther.

(((((Psssst, Carbie, meet me at the zoo, ok?  I'll wait for you near the lions and tigers. Don't tell anyone about it because I have a reputation to uphold, and I can't be seen associating with pervs.  Shhhhhhh.))))

What are you talking about, Carbie?  I met you last night at about at eleven o'clock in the darkened corridor, we did it all night long like two sweaty, panting, hotblooded beasts in every position known to mankind, and then fell asleep in each other's arms.  When I awoke this morning, you were gone, and there was a pile of $50 bills on my pillow . . . wait a second, that wasn't you???  Er, um, never mind.
