Bean-counter. Carrot and stick. A bun in the oven. Hot dog! As slow as molasses. Beefcake. Corny. Oater. Proof is in the pudding.

What are some other everyday expressions or adages that use the names of foods but do not refer to that food?  To increase how interesting this can be, would you please include any of them that you know in other languages* too? Thanks!

*Please provide the English translation of any foreign-language entries, if you would be so kind.

    It’s as easy as pie.

You want to have your cake and eat it too.

That’s the way the cookie crumbles.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating.

There’s no use crying over spilt milk.

works for or is paid peanuts

to get into or to be in a pickle

to drop or fall like a sack of potatoes

to buy or bought a lemon or it turned out to be a lemon

to put or keep all one’s eggs in one basket

    to go bananas

    to be full of beans

    to spill the beans

    he’s nuts

    he goes nuts

    to butter someone up

to be the cream of the crop

    the apple of his eye

    like peas in a pod.

    easy as pie

take it with a grain of salt
