When you get depressed, assuming you do, is it usually a short-termer or a long laster? How do you cope during it?

    It may last a few days, perhaps occasionally as much as two or three weeks. But it is difficult to give a precise answer because one person's depression is another person's sad is another person's normal. As for how I cope...exercise, hot baths, lavender oil, St John's wort, and socialising or spending time with my family all help alleviate it somewhat.

    One size does not fit all Rev. Very true. Thank you for your thoughtful and helpful reply. When I read "hot baths" for some reason my mind flashed way back to my childhood. There used to be public baths  in downtown Los Angeles called "Olympic Baths or something close to that. I vaguely remember being in a car in the backseat and having my dad drive by it. I think in Japan the people take communal baths as well or so I've seen in movies. As for lavender oil do you just apply it on your wrists or is it a spray you use like air freshener? Listening to nifty music helps me and also  escaping into a very good movie. But only for the duration of the song or movie. I don't get depressed often and I usually snap out of it with no lasting damage but of late it seems to be a sort of malaise that is lingering. It's an odd feeling. I'm not used to it.     About lavender oil...if you take a bath you can sprinkle a few drops on the surface of the bathwater, or you can sprinkle a few drops on your bedcover or pillow before going to bed. Some people use oil-burners to fragrance a room - these use a candle flame to warm a small sample of the oil in a little saucer so that it slowly evaporates; I don't like them because I don't care for the smell of smoke or hot paraffin wax. Lavender has a calming effect so it is good for anxiety or mild depression. If there is an essential oils shop in the town where you live, they may be able to advise you on which one will suit your needs, or let you try samples.

    This is an extremely helpful and informative reply Rev. We're going out doing errands and shopping Wednesday and I just put "lavender oil" on my list of things to get. I do appreciate your fleshing out how it can used. I'm already feeling better thanks to folks like you who are sharing ways that work for them! Thanks a lot m'dear. I shall let you know after I've tried it if it worked for me as it works for thee! :)

    I get depressed sometimes. When I do , I usually try to get some exercise or picture all those poor people in third world countries and how horrible life must be for them. That snaps me out of it pretty quick.
