I would say 40-65.  Older is 65-79 and elderly is 80+

Middle aged has definately changed.  30 years ago I saw a sign at a State Employment Agency that said: "Senior Workers 45 and up."  Folks are living longer and have a much better life than before.
To Me "senior" is 70 + and Elderly can be 80+ it depends on the person nd their health.  Life can wear a person out before their time as well.

  • Never have classified anyone middle-age or elderly.  My family were way younger than their years. And defied mere numbers putting them in a box.

I understand not wanting to be put in a box due to age, but it you had to give a description about someone you didn't know, let's say in a criminal situation, you would have to take a guess at their age, along with other attributes.

  • Great point SS!  In my opinion  saying someone appeared to be in their 40's is more accurate and not the same as calling them middle-aged which can mean any age number in view of the different, individual perceptions of what that classification means to someone being asked.

For what it's worth, this question came about because someone made a reference to middle-aged women and included herself in that category. I responded and also included myself in that category and was informed I was "too young" to call myself middle-aged. So, it's not that anyone is really labeling others here, it was more about what connotation something has. And, for what it's worth, based on the answers here, I apparently do not qualify for the term. I'm not entirely sure what that makes me (and no... thank you one and all... I do not need your help assigning me names or labels lol), but it was a question worth pondering.

    Thank you for your thoughts!

That's redundant! Considering that a filly is, by definition, a horse younger than four years, there is no such thing as an old filly!

I was the one who so informed you and I did not mean it to be offensive.  When I think of having been your age I can't help but smile thinking how many great things were ahead of me and how much I still had to learn.  About everything.  Which may be still true of my current age!

Certainly not before 40! But I know people who are in their thirties and consider themselves older. What a shame! What say??

  • I would say 40 to 60, when the average person's libido starts diminishing but hasn't quite disappeared.

  • Not quite. Middle age is more than just a number. It's more your "libido index".

Well I am now a few weeks over that and at least so far with libido is intact.  What has changed is it less exerts itself improperly than formerly.  Which - I don't know - but I guess is diminishing but very comfortable since it is still there when I want and need it.
