Is there a specific type of food that Frenchmen serve around Christmas and New Year's Eve?

In the US, most people eat ham for Christmas and drink spiced eggnog. What about in France?

    How do you know that?  Who said that?  I have never had nor prepared either of those for Christmas.  Never.

    Smoked Carp is found in most Germanic and Central European countries.  It is used on fasting days, say like Christmas Eve.  In Scandenavia they use Lutefisk.  IMO both are disgusting.  Growing up in a household with Norwegian and German heritage I suffered through both "delicacies".  The Doc and I have promised they will never ever appear inour lives as we move forward and our children will never suffer as we did as children

    Lobster seems to be a must for Frenchies. 

    Ham has never been cooked by me at Christmas.  Stick to what you know.

    Depends on where in France you are.  In Alsace you will find a lot of traditional German foods common, Brittany & Normandy seafood, Burgundy pates, Langudoc spice beef & Red Wine, Provence spiced fruits and fowl, Loire Boar, and in the Savoy Fondue. 

    There are so many variations from village to village, region to region,  as to make a monolithic one size fits all next to impossible.  The US is more monolithic choice.

    I do love from the Champagne Region Christmas eve Quail or Squab served in Plum Brandy to break the fast of the preceding day.  Think anywhere around Rhiems going over toward  the Lorraine and Alsace.  Oh yeah the Franks were a Germanic tribe who crushed the remaining Gauls and Romans

  • Not sure what is the traditional French holiday meal.  My favorite Frenchman has never told me.  Though he did say that on New Year's Eve they eat 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight as fast as possible for good luck:)
