Define "swamp" for me

Yeah this may start an exchange of heated words but I'm going for it anyway.

So one of President Trump's campaign promises was to 'drain the swamp' and so here's the third government shutdown. He says he's proud of it and I'm thinking this is the swamp he's talking about. But while some employees are going without a paycheck some senior officials (cabinet secretaries and under secretaries among them) are getting anywhere from a $10,000 to $12,000 raise on the 5th of January.
Can anyone define this 'swamp' he was talking about? Is it the federal employees, the legislators, the WH staffers, staffers for the lawmakers?

The swamp is those in Washington who have been there too long.

So, Chuck Grassley, Lindsay Graham and all the other GOP oldies should go, right?

What you're supposed to be draining when you're up to the ass in alligators.

”The swamp“ that Trump campaigned about draining is/was the stagnant government institutions in DC populated by repugnant creatures wallowing happily in stench of their own making.

In failing pathetically to live up to Yet another of his goofy campaign slogans, Trump has not only NOT drained the swamp at all, but added his own personal pipeline of “Trump sewage” pouring into it, unabated.

Look at the state of the US Federal Government today, is it any less cruddy and stagnant than it was in 2016? This post was edited by Don Barzini at January 5, 2019 12:14 PM MST

    in his eyes
    it's all about Him
    not you and me
He's the only one that matters
    Get rid of government
    shut it down
    Rule the people with fear
    tell them what to think
    watch Trump TV
    rule with fear
    Trump is the only truth...

    .....oh dear

I don't usually answer any political questions. I can only give you a literal definition for a swamp if you would like. This post was edited by Element 99 at January 5, 2019 4:24 PM MST

  • I know what a swamp is as far as a mass of marshy land goes, and I don't blame you for avoiding political questions. That's like stepping in quicksand.

    That sucks.

And the way you wrote that -- obviously, I don't know the specific details, but, in just that one sentence, you summed up your entire uncomfortable nickname experience for the reader. I'm sorry for whatever all went down but excellent job in sharing it here using, simply and literally --  just words.
