Do any oft-repeated quotes drive you nuts because they're false?

First off, ships are not always safe at shore, and secondly, Einstein didn't say that. Bah!

“There are no atheists in foxholes”.

Bull. There are plenty who have witnessed the atrocities of war firsthand and questioned God.

That's an interesting one because I thought it was probably true. Appreciate the enlightenment.

While the truth is that the majority of people alive today still hold beliefs in God(s), the fallacy in the quote is to claim fear invariably makes believers of everyone.
I’ve seen combat cause soldiers to abandon their faith.

I had an uncle who faught in the Korean War gave up his faith;  said he could not believe in a God that would allow such atrocities and suffering to occur. He would never discuss what he witnessed

My grandfather faught in the first war and during intense combat would try to make a deal with God -"f you let me survive this battle I promise I will give up the booze and cigarettes and be a good fellow"
He did survive with a wound to the neck but never changed. Was a devout Catholic but left the church in his later years.  This post was edited by Kittigate at February 10, 2019 4:05 PM MST

Sorry, but that one happens to be true.  The only truth about him

  • "Nice guys finish last".  I think nice guys often win in the long run.  The ones who finish last are the "nice" ones who are really being pushovers ... rather than nice.  There's a difference IMO.

  •  “Money can’t buy happiness“ I kinda thinks that’s bullshizzat. Even if I can’t ”buy” happiness, I’m pretty sure I could rent it. That’s close enough for me.

Also, money can't buy me love.

I LOVE YOU if you pay me money to love you.  I can do it.

"That which doesn't kill you makes you stronger". No, it usually wears you down or gives you PTSD.

Never heard that one. Would guess most that people tend to fall back on when they can't think of anything to say themselves could well be false.  They don't care but they are just looking for something to say.  Doesn't matter to them. Most of those sayings are false.. Or very very general.

You are right. I was totally off the beam.  I thought you were referring to the 'what doesn't kill you makes you stronger' quote.  So sorry.  My bad.
