History was always my favorite, especially medieval history.

  • I love reading about Henry VIII and the Tudor dynasty.    As far as research goes, Genealogy is at the top of my list, followed by the history of Deadwood and Lawrence County.

Recently I got into the exodus story. Fifty locations are named, but we only know where three of them are. Here is a simulation, but the suggested location does not take them out of Egypt.

Most recently I have been learning about the long-term affects of Adverse Childhood Experiences, like being backhanded in the nose.

The 1889 Johnstown Flood (Johnstown and surrounding communities, Pennsylvania, USA)

The murders of Abby and Andrew Borden, August 4, 1892 (Fall River, Massachusetts, USA)

The Great Hinckley Fire of 1894 (Hinckley, Minnesota, USA)

-- yes, I, too, wonder how/why these three events compel and pull deeply at me; they all happened within five years of each other

    a memorial at Hinckley - -

    1894 Hinckley Fire

Random factoid: The Chicago fire was not the biggest fire in US history. It was not even the biggest fire in the US on that date.

    Boy, do I feel smart!

I haven't studied the Hinckley Fire as much as I'd like but I believe that it killed more people than the Chicago Fire and it was bigger, too.
But don't quote me on either of those.
The Hinckley Fire had more-than-several fascinatingly tragic-to-me storied that happened to individuals, like at least a hundred people got into a large collection of water/pond where they then were surrounded by flames. But many survived by getting in the water.
The picture I posted -- that memorial is, I think, at the site where the water was.

I just ended a sentence with "was."

I have no information about this Hinkley fire. I was referring to the Peshtigo fire.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peshtigo_Fire
The Peshtigo Fire was a very large forest fire that took place on October 8, 1871, in and around Peshtigo, Wisconsin. It burned approximately 1,200,000 acres

    OMG --
I only got to this part of the article and I had to stop -- I've not heard of this fire. Jesus.

    " . . . with the estimated deaths of around 1,500 people"

I can't read more at the moment.

EDIT: Thanks for posting it, though.
    :)

EDIT 2: The Chicago Fire killed more than the Hinckley Fire, according to one thing I just read. This post was edited by WelbyQuentin at February 15, 2019 4:44 PM MST

With the incredible drama of this Peshtigo fire -- I wonder why the Chicago Fire is so much more well-known. especially since they occurred on the same day.

Whatever subject matter draws my interest.
I have studied as much history, religion and philosophy as I can get my hands on. I enjoy researching current and historical events, and have a particular passion for earth sciences (biology, geology, climatology, etc.) and Far Eastern culture.

As an engineer by training, I am wired to formulate effective questions to discover the best data. I relish the process. Few things are as rewarding to me as learning something I didn’t know before.

    Hello Element99
Architectural history, in particular American residential history and the destruction thereof..We have lost and are still losing our great treasures. Treasures which tell the story of our country.
We will be remembered not for the monuments we have built, but by those we have destroyed..
