Brits and Ozzies...help me out. When you say a word that ends with an 'a' why do you say 'er' at the end?

Example: California becomes Californyer, tuna becomes tuner. Also when a word ends with an 'r', yours becomes 'eh' or 'uh. Example: Butter becomes buttuh and rather becomes ratheh.

  • Trust me.  I got someone with a close enough accent, that I get to listen to after bottles of wine, quite often.  Thank you very much.  LOL!  To this southern boy his accent could seem retahded, but I think he's Wicked pissah!  Could we possibly be referring to the same old goat?

    We just put emphasis on different parts of the words, sometimes we drop vowels depending on where a vowel is.  By the way where is your h in herbs? Did you lose them in the basil? :)

    It's not just the words you've mentioned either...

  • I often hear people in the Northeastern states do that as well.  They seem to drop the "r" when it is present and insert it when it is not.

    Park becomes pahk.  yard becomes yahd.

    idea becomes ideer.  etc...

    Allegedly, the Disney character Goofy got his accent from folks in Washington state.
    They tend to add R ... Warshington.  Doing the "warsh" instead of "wash".
    But they don't do it all the time ... just mainly on words that start with "wa".  So it's really annoying.  LOL
