I know a lot of young people use "Whatever" (or, "Wha' evvah"), and as sarcastic dismissal.

I try not to say anything, or will admit not knowing, but whatever I do say, it's never the sneer "Whatever!"

So it's dismissive then. I wonder who coined it first and why it caught on? Word or phrase derivation/origination is mysterious to me. I remember the first time I encountered "24/7" in something I read. I thought it was pretty dam*ed clever and I use it a lot. But who thought it up and how did it become part of the vernacular? Thank you for your reply Durdle! :)
