Did you know that saltwater taffy has no saltwater in it at all?


  What are some other things that have names consisting partially of elements that they do not contain?  Mock turtle soup is already taken.

    I beg to differ.  It does have salt and it probably has some water in it too.

    Ingredients Salt Water Taffy

    • 1 1/4 c
      cane sugar
    • 4 tsp
      corn starch
    • 1/2 c
      corn syrup, light (karo)
    • 1/2 c
      water
    • 1 Tbsp
      butter, unsalted (irish organic)
    • ·
      plus more for cookie sheet and hands
    • 1/2 tsp
      sea salt
    • 2 tsp
      extract flavor (opt)
    • ·
      ( orange, lemon, cherry, maple, etc.)
    • 1/4 tsp
      pure vanilla extract
    • ·
      food coloring (opt)

  • No.  Some modern makers started adding  salt to the water to.for the name but only a few and after the fact.  The name comes from a flood in Atlantic City.

    I live near Cedar Point Amusement Park. (mostly killer roller coasters these days)  They have salt water taffy stands at the park exits and they do a booming business as patrons are leaving at closing time. Then they eat the taffy as they head home. Then they lose fillings in their teeth and have to see the dentist first thing Monday morning.
