Aaagh! Stu B, you, better than most on many social sites, already have a very good understanding of the phenomenon.
The world is being swept by a tidal wave of narcissistic demagogues.
It has something to do with the feedback loops of social media like Twitter and Facebook. People get their news from biased sources which reinforce their existing views and refuse to consider other opinions.
Although each side thinks the other is the most intolerant, surveys by political analysts and sociologists have found that a certain core of the right has a special penchant for loyalty. Once they've decided that a particular character champions their views, he (so far, it's always a he) can do no wrong. If he does wrong, it's not mentioned, or minimised, or excused. This type likes to believe in hierarchies and benevolent authorities - it makes them feel comfortable. Daddy will take care of it.

I personally believe that types like Obama are the future - all they need is a majority in both houses to be effective. The pendulum swings from left to right, back and forth, like a grandfather clock. When the progressives bring in change, it's usually very hard to fully reverse the changes - especially if they are brought in with experimental pilot programs and gradual increments. This society does slowly move forward and improve in some ways. If this were not so, slavery would still be legal.

Societies carry a tremendous weight of conservatism, even in our Future Shock driven world. They don't like changing habits or adapting to big changes.

By the force of a boorish disposition and shameless bravado; an astonishing number of lies and false claims; and, more importantly, about $400 million of his daddy’s money.

Moreover, Trump is the ugly outcome of a long process of social, cultural and political decay that has metastasized over the past few decades, though I think he is not the final symptom.  This post was edited by Don Barzini at May 25, 2019 7:04 AM MDT

    AS Kittigate says
    by being a BULLY
    He cheats with everything.
He uses people and then destroys them
especially if they disagree with him.
    He lies constantly
He makes up fake news promoting himself
    He belittles people.
He rips off people that do work for him
    doing his bankruptcy thing.
He cares only about himself being on top
Disrespecting and belittling all that disagree
He destroys all that do not support him.
He is establishing a monarchy and
even the Dems seem incapable of being
forceful and sticking up for the US Constitution.
It's becoming  the USA of Trump.
    Need More?
The man in charge has got to go!
