So Jeffrey Epstein offed himself. Why is the Attorney General "appalled" by this?

Why the disappointment? This saves the time and expense of a trial and eventual imprisonment.

Just a wild guess here, Stu.

Maybe Mr Barr is “appalled” because such a high profile suspect was found dead in a Federal Detention facility, which is run by the US Dept of Justice.

As the Attorney General, that would be Mr Barr’s Justice Dept. It happened on his watch.

He thought Epstein was still on suicide watch, and safe.  Turns out he was neither.

But what's the difference? Why shouldn't anyone facing life in prison be allowed to commit suicide instead?

The Supreme Court has said that when someone is incarcerated they must be protected from harm and provided pretty much any and all medical care, including mental health care.  Allowing a suicide runs contrary to that, especially since he "allegedly" tried a few weeks ago.  I'm sure the DOJ expected to get  information from Epstein to bring other prosecutions but they have documents which, on their own, may boost other prosecutions.

I don't disagree with you that Epstein saved the taxpayers money. This post was edited by Thriftymaid at August 12, 2019 7:04 PM MDT

How he died, and that he probably chose death over spending the rest of his life in prison?

That's not what he meant. He's saying it's fishy, and I agree - a bit like the guy who "sucided" by shooting himself 23 times in the head.
Knowing too much about the rich and powerful has ALWAYS been a capital crime, unless you're also rich and powerful. Stripped of that, Jeff was a liability.
