What is probably the coldest water that you have ever swam in?

I joined a Polar Bear swim group a few times but I just waded into the water far as I could, not brave enough to submerge.

Here in Minnesota the lakes over  in the winter. They water never really gets warm. If the water hits 70 F (about 20 C) is considered warm. I don't know what the coldest water I've swum in is, but probably around 60 F.

You’re not just trying to see me in my Speedo again, are you? I fell for this trick the last time, but never again.  Grrrrrrrr.

Wait, does that mean you want to see me without the Speedo? I’m calling the police!

Nanoose Creek it is glacier fed so even in the middle of summer you can't hold your feet in it for more then 30 seconds (at the top end of the creek). Further down the creek the the water is a bit warmer so it makes a nice swim on a hot day. Cheers

  • I go wind surfing even in the winter.  I think the coldest temperature of the Atlantic is 9˚C in July, August and September.  The water begins to warm up in October.  I did a polar plunge in Ushuaia, Argentina once.  I was in town and I heard about it, so I joined them.  The water temperature was 4˚C and the air temperature was 0˚C.

Now that you’ve done a polar plunge once, do you think you might ever do it again?

  • I would do it again if I'm in a place that has a polar plunge when I'm there.  I don't know if it's an annual event in Ushuaia or not.  One of the passengers on the flight to Ushuaia told me about it.  I had free time that day, so I went to the polar plunge and jumped into the water with them.  I jumped in the water with my regular clothes because it was unplanned and I didn't have a swimsuit with me, but I brought along dry clothes.

For me, that would be Lake Superior. Actually, I didn't swim in the lake, I fell in while fishing for steelhead. The water in Superior is always cold but during steelhead season it was a shock to the system when I fell in. :)
