  You begin running, but do you run in the same direction that he’s running, or in the opposite direction? (Remaining in place is not an option.)

    This sounds like a crappy movie scenario. You are running down (or is it up?)  the street away from a monster/alien/tsunami, as is everyone that didn't get vaporized, crushed or drowned.     I think ... unless the street is on a hill ... "down the street" applies when the street numbers are getting lower, and "up the street" applies when they are getting higher.
