What are grits?

Automatic score! After 63 years I still don't know what grits are. Potatoes? Rice? Pasta? Pieces of nuts? Meat combo? I don't come from grit territory.

Also called hominy grits . (especially in Southern cooking) coarsely ground hominy, or white corn, boiled to a thick consistency and then sometimes fried, eaten as a breakfast dish or as a side dish with meat.: Compare polenta.

Not very tasty. You have to add stuff to them to make it edible.

Salt and butter is good, perhaps a bit of cheese on top as well.

Grits are made from corn.  Some from hominy, which is corn that has been messed with.  Grits are a pure food and it's a regular in my house.  Sometimes we have it for dinner with herbs, green vegetable, and cheese all mixed together.  Other times we have it with sausage chipped up and added to it with cheese.  Other times we just have cheese grits.  And, surprisingly sometimes we just aded a little butter to it.  When I boil a chicken to make chicken salad I always save the broth by freezing it in ice cube trays then putting the cubes in a freezer bag.  Grits cooked in chicken broth rather than water is a real delight.  Same for rice.
