Smart thing to have after the age of 50 and really no big deal.

I was really afraid to have one done until a close friend of mine contracted colon cancer and ultimately died.  She was only in her 50's.  By the time she had any symptoms, her cancer was advanced.

I'm such a ditz that it would be just like me to rattle off to a member named Colonoscopy without a thought.  Bahahaha

I had one myself recently. There is a great deal more brouhaha around them than is truly warranted, given how easy the procedure is for most people.

I hope your gastroenterologist gave you a clean bill of health.

    Yes, it was OK, thanks.

Can't wait for next one in three (or maybe five) years' time.

@Malizz -- My understanding is current recommendations for the procedure are every 5 years if you have risk factors and every 10 years if you don't.

So you got some time before the next time.

They change their story. Apparently, the rule was 3 years historically but it changed to 5 years, but the consultant is still sticking with 3 years. My risk factor is diabetes.

@Malizz -- Medicine is sometimes not as exact a science as we would wish. My brother recently had prostate cancer surgery (he's recovering fine) and, in my research about the condition, I found there are some who argue the screening for it is borderline useless.

The argument: without screening, about 5 men out of every 1,000 would die of prostate cancer. With screening, about 4 men out of every 1,000 die of prostate cancer.

Yet, of course, I'm very glad my brother was tested and his cancer was found and removed.

Your gastroenterologist is probably using a mixture of intuition and "it doesn't do any harm" to justify the 3-year screening interval.

    Good luck.

I'm quite glad to have the procedure as a precaution because I witnessed my mother having to look after Grandad who eventually died from prostrate cancer.

The prescription charges were a burden for us.
