What has made or would make the telemarketers give up trying to contact you altogether?

  I’m referring to them even dialing your number in the first place.  Besides, what if that friend of yours were to call you from a new phone number that you don’t recognize? By not answering calls from unknown numbers, you might miss his.

That is a thought. 

  That has worked for you; mine is also unlisted as far as our home phone is concerned, yet modern technology such as robo-calling and random number searching allows for circumventing the phone company’s systems and dial the number anyway, and the same goes for cell phones too.

I've gotten a few robocalls on my landline, but most have come when I'm not home, so it doesn't register in voice mail.  Since I rarely turn on my cell phone, anything that come in there I automatically delete/block if i don't recognize the number.  It's usually some woman yakking at me in Chinese.

 

  I get calls from that Chinese lady too. I think she wants me, but the language barrier is quite prohibiting.

I once called that number back and got voice mail.  You can imagine the message I left.

I've gotten a few calls at the office.  Someone suggested that you put them on hold and leave them there until they hang up.

LOL!!! Just might have to do that next time. :)
