    They very likely did believe in some form of spiritual after-life, even before they developed what became Judaism and Christianity.

    It is one of the common themes of most religions known, extant or extinct; and very likely of ones long-lost for millennia before Moses et al. It lessens the fear of death, and comforts the bereaved.

    Archaeological evidence suggests definite funerary rites and possible after-life promises, in cultures far older than the Hebrews', though obviously we cannot know what those far-ancient people actually believed.
