I was going to say 18 and it was to New Orleans, but then I remembered as a kid, I went up in a small aircraft. It was some type of charity event and they charged by your weight. My mom refused to be weighed so the rest of us went without her.

Lol, I don't know either of you, but she certainly sounds like your mom!

  • What a great idea for raising money. I understand your mother's reluctance, though. There are some things you don't want announced in public.

  • Never been on a commercial plane.
Been in a single prop and helicopter.  Not much interest in flying to be honest.

Yes, I remember it vividly: I was 18 years old and I boarded a plane bound for San Diego, California to enter Marine Corps boot camp.

  • "MCRD ... where concrete shines!"
That's what my Marine friend told me
when he invited me to see the place and he was right.
(The big, entry hall's floor was concrete and it did shine!)

  • Yes, I remember it well. My Uncle took me up in an old AT-6 trainer plane when I was 15 and scared the heck out of me! But the rush was so cool that from there on in? He taught me to fly at 15 and I learned to fly all his vintage WW2 restored airplanes. Love to fly but the Docs grounded me a few months ago.

  • I can only imagine how much it hurt to have to stop, Rooster. It'd be a wonderful passion to have.

I know I was not old enough to remember them being called aircraft.

    And I am old.

  • We just called 'em planes when I was a kid. Still do a lot of the time. I've been slapped for it a few times but so long as it gets the idea across...

  • I was only five years old, so I'm not sure if it was a DC-3 or a DC-6,
but the 6's were already available by then, so I picked the best.
Why not!  Nice looking picture too. :)

My first time in an aircraft of any kind was when I was 21.  It was for my honeymoon vacation.  My first flight was from Watertown, SD to Minneapolis / Saint Paul then from Minneapolis / Saint Paul to Frankfurt, Germany.

  • Exciting for a kid. Maybe not so much these days but back in my time it was almost unheard of.

It was of necessity. My father left and Mom had to ship 5 of us to various other places. One of my sisters and I went to live with an Aunt in Daytona.
